Solid and Liquid Waste Management (SLWM) in Darjeeling

Following the visit in December 2023 by BMGF team member to the dumping shoot in Darjeeling and the subsequent meetings with representatives from the Darjeeling and Kurseong municipalities, in February 2024, Dr. Roshan Shrestha, Deputy Director, Water, Sanitation, & Hygiene, BMGF had an online meeting with Dr. Preksha Shree Chhetri from DWS to discuss the way forward for the SLWM project in Darjeeling. Dr. Shreshta suggested including the project under the Parvat Manthan Forum owing to strong similarities in the nature and geographical area of work. Supported by BMGF, the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) and the DWS will be working together to respond to the dire need of solid and liquid waste management in the Darjeeling region. In March, the NIUA team including the Director, Dr. Debolina Kundu visited Darjeeling where Dr. Kundu and  Mr. Shringla decided to take the collaboration forward with a MoU. The MoU was signed in June, 2024 following which, project officers from NIUA and DWS conducted a survey of the entire town area. This survey will serve as the foundational basis for planning and execution of the project.
