Darjeeling Livelihood Project

In January 2024, the Darjeeling Welfare Society began a long-term project on ‘Supplemental Income for Tea Estate workers in Darjeeling region. The first leg of the project began with the DWS team visiting and assessing the situation of workers in Panighatta tea estate and the Makaibari tea estate. The project is successfully ongoing in Panighatta and Makaibari and has helped around 2000 households in the area. Other tea estates are currently being studied for inclusion in the next phase of the project. The project is sponsored by the Gates Foundation and is being undertaken in collaboration with Grant Thornton Bharat.
